The Smile That Will Melt Your Heart
Have you ever met an angel here on Earth?
I have.
Her name is Gladys Kalibbala.
My words cannot possibly begin to give you a proper introduction to this amazing, strong, and beautiful woman, so I will let her introduce herself to you via CNN’s African Voices.
Gladys is a role model and inspiration to me, and it is an absolute honor to call her my friend. I gave Gladys an open invitation to guest blog anytime, and I would gladly publish her articles to help advocate for her mission to help children and women in need.
When a mother puts everything in God’s hands
By Gladys Kalibbala, October 15, 2016
Monica Kiiza 24yrs is a young mother and a resident of Kitende village in Kyegegwa District located in the western part of Uganda – E/Africa. When she displays a beautiful smile you may think its because of happiness but she has tears inside her heart. This is because of her sick daughter Khudura Nankambwe 4yrs who was born with exposed intestines (the intestines were only covered by a transparent membrane).
When Kudhura turned a year old, her father Hussein Senkambwe who was by then 26yrs abandoned them with her mother in the middle of a bus park in Kampala the Capital City of Uganda. The couple had spent two days in Mulago National Referral hospital where Kudhura had been admitted for suspected pneumonia. Monica says her life has never been the same since that day as she keeps on struggling with Kudhura alone because Senkambwe never came back.

Unfortunately, after a few weeks of the separation she found that her boyfriend had left her pregnant. She is now a mother of two beautiful girls with a lot of doubts as to what the future has for them especially Kudhura. Monica is unemployed and because she spends a lot of time in hospital with Kudhura even her gardens where she used to make sure the family has food are no more. She was just discharged this week from hospital where they have spent five months with her daughter who was being prepared for an operation.
A group of doctors from Turkey had planned to operate her but even after intensive nutritional management where Kudhura improved on her weight from 10 kgs – 15.5kgs, it has been found out that the operation is impossible. According to doctors the swelling is now too big for a possible operation and added it had to be done before she turned a year old!!

Monica’s wish now is to make her daughter happy until God decided what’s best for her. With the second girl ready to start school while the mother has to provide good feeding for Kudhura, life turns out to be so challenging. She rents two small rooms and currently paying for rent plus other needs is almost impossible and needs good Samaritans to come to her aid!!
The Beautiful Kudhura.
